The AARP just did a study which found, not surprisingly, that family members who take care of their elders at home do that at a very high cost to themselves. We see that personally with friends, some of whom have basically no life except work and caretaking. Obviously in some cases it is financially necessary and in others a loving sense of duty. But in situations where the elder can afford professional care, we wonder. As we heard recently when a senior moved into a CCRC, they did it because they didn't want to have to "burden or worry" their children.

See this fascinating article at NPR, and here is a quote from it:
"Lynn Feinberg, who co-authored the AARP study, says modern family caregiving is incredibly stressful.

"The burden on families is huge," Feinberg says. "While families are stepping up to the plate and make this contribution to society, the cost to their own health and financial security is huge.""

Reuters did a nice followup on the AARP study with some interesting personal examples.

One of the hardest situations is when the caretaking of an elder falls to one member of the family. They can feel overwhelmed and cheated as the lion's share of the care falls to them, while siblings do nothing or very little to support. The problem is exacerbated when other siblings live far away. Yet there are some techniques you can follow to try to engage your siblings in the care. This article has some good suggestions.

Of course, at some assisted living homes they are being charged a high toll on for care, which is sometime very difficult to afford for everyone. But there are some very well organized old age homes projects working, who are providing there homes at some reasonable prices with all necessary and luxuries facilities along with 24/7 nursing facility.

I think at this time only care matters.
